I heard that for forcing the log to produce you want to drop it in a stream with cold running water for 24 hours then bring it out and leave it tipped up with one end in contact with the ground and in about a week it should be covered. That of course is only if you log is ready to produce and fully inoculated.

It takes about a year and a half to get a 'shroom harvest. Fellow IthaCanner, Shannon H, showed a bunch of us how to do this about 15 months ago. So I have log with shitake spores hanging out in my woods. I don't check it often enough, but it doesn't look like anything is happening yet. Seems like the weather this year must be fungal nirvana.

a friend of ours did this last year. I never heard how his harvest went.
