Well...the author has spoken! As the arbiter of taste (in all its meanings), class and worthy pastimes, Ms. Dickerson wields her hefty urban-centric disdain at home food preservers. Like any run-of-the-mill contrarian, her argument relies upon belittling what she clearly has no direct experience with. It's hard to tell what annoys her more: a fine homemade jam or self-empowerment outside a cubicle.
