thinking about beekeeping supplies for the upcoming season

I'm wondering about using ALL medium supers for at least a few of our hives this year--including the hive body--so that everything is easily interchangeable, rather than a deep for the hive body and mediums on top.  Any thoughts?See More

gigi marks replied to gigi marks's discussion what to do about smoky flavor when evaporating over a woodfire? in the group Sugar & Honey
"Thanks, Katie. We found that we really needed the added chimney (we've used cement blocks for the fireplace and cement blocks and bricks for the chimney) to get the smoke away from the sap. I think we'll build something more stable and…"

Katie Quinn-Jacobs replied to gigi marks's discussion what to do about smoky flavor when evaporating over a woodfire? in the group Sugar & Honey
"To keep your syrup from being smoky you'll need to channel the smoke from the fire.  You can build a simple fire brick fireplace with a 4' vent/chimney to let the smoke exhaust away from your sap.  We did this growing up in the…"

what to do about smoky flavor when evaporating over a woodfire?

I'm wondering if anyone can give some advice--we've always evaporated inside, on the stovetop, but we made an outside fireplace and set out pans to evaporate over a woodfire. But the resulting syrup is really smoky tasting. What might I try differently?See More

two items: squash bugs and hoop houses

i've got squash beetless on my pumpkins and butternut, and they are doing serious damage--i've been hand-squashing them every day, but the pumpkins are starting to really fail. any ideas? i don't want to use rotenone...also, my son, sasha, wants to build us a small hoop house before he goes back to college--maybe 8 feet wide by 14, and something i can stand up in (i'm 5'6")--any advice or suggested places for designs?See More
