Susan Verberg replied to Sharon Berger's discussion free roosters and hens in the group Livestock
"Hi Sharon, we're still rebuilding our flock from a persistent fox this spring - homing our geese with the chickens did the trick - and could use some more laying birds... ours are freeranging too, they'd fit right in :) Susan"

free roosters and hens

I've got 2 buff roosters (born this April) to give away. They seem like nice fellows, but we aren't interested in keeping roosters right now. Also, 6 buff hens (2-3 years old) who still lay big, brown eggs occasionally. All healthy looking. We raised some more hens this spring and are just downsizing the flock. All of them have been free-ranging. Let me know if you are interested in any of these critters. Thanks, SharonSee More

David Quinn-Jacobs replied to Sharon Berger's discussion how long do you keep your laying hens? in the group Livestock
"We're giving away 5 "retired" layers for stewing or as broody hens. If anyone would like them, please give us a shout. Picking them up in the evening when they come back to the coop would be best."

Susan Verberg replied to Sharon Berger's discussion how long do you keep your laying hens? in the group Livestock
"I seem to have a similar experience as Katie... when I was researching for homestead free ranging I found a good way is a three part rotational, 10 new chicks every year where in the third season the new chicks phase out the old ones. It's what…"

Katie Quinn-Jacobs replied to Sharon Berger's discussion how long do you keep your laying hens? in the group Livestock
"We've learned to replace our flock every year. We tried to get a second year out of our hens, but it's not worth the feed. They did well until they reached 21 months and then the combination of winter, molting and age brought egg…"

how long do you keep your laying hens?

Hi folksWhat do you think? How long do you keep your layers for? We have a mixture of ages among our birds, so it is hard to tell who is productively laying and who is not. Thanks,SharonSee More
