"Yes, I can see where that might work.  The bags keep them away from the plants.  Not sure how long root veggies like carrots or parsnips would do in a grow bag, however.  Some of ours are 8 to 10 inches long."

Voles Ate My Roots!

Now that the ground has finally thawed, we've been out in the garden to collect some of the roots that we let over-winter.  Sadly, the voles have gotten there first.  They complete ate our parsnips and beets.  Don't seem to care for rutabagas, however. So now we have the problem of how to deal with these critters.  Mousetraps baited with pieces of apple is recommended on a number of websites.Have you had problems with voles?  What did you you do about it?- MarkSee More

"Scything certainly is  good exercise, especially on a warm summer day.  You can also get into places that no tractor can reach.  Also, you have a LOT more control over the actual cutting."

"I have a scythe and use it on my farm.  Maybe later in the year, when there are things to cut, you can come down and I'll give you a one-on-one demo.  I can show you how to sharpen it, too."

Book Discussion Night - The Omnivore's Dilemma at Melisa Casano's House

March 8, 2013 from 7pm to 8:30pm
Our first book discussion night was a great success, so we're going to do it again.  This time, we'll be discussing Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma.  This classic book explores how we produce, market, and consume food.  It asks questions that we need to think about for ourselves and our families. If you've already read the book - great!  If not, you can borrow it from the library or a friend.  It's still…See More

HI Mark,  That sounds great!  My DH, Buzz thinks it's crazy (we do have a tractor with a mower which he uses once a year on the back hill), but the descriptions I've read (admittedly from people who sell scythes and scything workshops!) make it sound like great exercise and even meditative.  If it wouldn't be too hard, and would keep us from using gasoline, it seems like a nice alternative to me . . . maybe doing a bit at a time . . .  At any rate, thanks for the offer.  I hope it works out.

P.S.  Very nice slide show!
