IthaCan Organic Cider Pressing 2013 at Kate's house

September 28, 2013 from 1pm to 4pm
We'll be pressing apples again this fall. BYOA (Bring Your Own Apples). If you have access to unsprayed/untreated apples bring 'em along. Last year, we weren't able to have this event due to the late frost that ruined most apple crops in our area, so let's hope for more apple-friendly weather this year.Spouse and kids welcome! In 2009, we averaged 2.5gal/bushel of apples; in 2010, we 2.25gal/bushel. Be sure to bring cleaned containers with lids. We can have 10 member families at this event.…See More

What type of food preserving do you want to do with others?
Brewing, Canning, Cellaring, Cheesemaking, Drying, Freezing, Lacto-Fermentation, Pickling, Personal Care Products, Smoking, Stocking a Year's Supply
What do you hope to achieve by joining IthaCan?
I believe home food processing will become increasingly essential to the well-being of our households and our community, as we move further into the difficult times ahead. Preserving the food we grow is a critical element of building resiliency into the local foodshed. And...I want to have fun along the way doing it! Getting to meet new faces and working with others is an important part of this for me.
Do you have any expertise or resources that you can offer to the IthaCan community?
Yes, I grew up preserving food my family grew and continue (40 odd years later) to do the same.
What is your favorite home-preserved food?
Canned peaches...oh yeah.

Letter to Nat'l Center of Home Food Presevers re: BPA in Jarden Brand Canning Lids

After review from a number of our members, I emailed the letter below out this morning to Dr. Elizabeth Andress, who heads the National Center for Home Food Processing at the University of Georgia. Copies went to our local CCE of Tompkins County and a printed copy will go out today to Jarden (the maker of Ball & Kerr jars.)

IthaCan & Harvestation in Tompkins Weekly

IthaCanners, Louis Johnson and Seph Doliner, are featured in a photo for an article about Harvestation's launch in this week's Tompkins Weekly. Johnson and Doliner were part of an IthaCan salsa making Event where some of the ingredients were purchased through Harvestation. Fun to see IthaCan in the news.

"Increasingly, area residents are seeing the wisdom of putting food by. As households transition from… Continue

IthaCan makes it to public radio!

I spoke at WSKG last evening as part of a trio of guests on Community Conversations hosted by Crystal Sarakis. The topic was "Beyond Oil" and I was there on behalf of IthaCan and PreparedTompkins.org.

It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about things we do here on IthaCan as well as address the issue of energy descent. It was also good to catch up on wants going on in the Binghamton sustainability mov't and hear about the efforts underway in Caroline as well. If you want… Continue

Ugh, ok. I don't know what that means - intermail? How do I do that? I don't know what I was doing before when we were chatting. Sorry, I know you can't hold my hand through this. John has a facebook acct. I'll get him to help me figure all this out next time I see him.

Eh - I don't have any problem with it - I've been on FB for years - my kids bugged me to do it when it started, and I thought it was a good way to advertise my ukrainian eggs - and I"m on a knitters' forum too - sorry I didn't see this til now - I'm interested in all the food preserve in a peripheral way, but I'm not canning much these days - too many years of eating canned foods to make sure we consumed them all! Now krauts and fermenting, I really need to get into - !!! Hopefully I'll be able to do that soon - very very glad you've maintained this site. I think it's pretty unique! See you soon I hope!

Hi Katie, thanks you SO MUCH for hosting this and keeping it alive. I would like to call you to talk about an initiative I have been supporting in the Town of Dryden, called Dryden Solutions. We need somebody to help us with JAM making on July 13th in the evening, but I'm not sure the best way to post it here or more widely in Ithaca. Could we make a time to talk? 844-9550

Katie,
I couldn't get the RSVP to work on the canning jar comments, so here's my request:
4 Cases of the half gallon wide mouth jars.
Also, I'd like to ask what is your source for the mylar zipper-lock bags that go into the five gallon buckets for bulk storage? Thanks.

I'm really excited about getting started! This is something I have wanted to do for more than a decade, but I just didn't know how to get started. Connected with an experienced group will give me the confidence and support I need to really do it this time. I hope I can find ways to contribute to the group over time.
