Making Pasta From Local Grains at Ellis Hollow

May 5, 2013 from 2pm to 4pm
Looking to eat more locally?  Making pasta at home is child's play!  Join Kalle Brinnell, age 6, and her grandmother, Nancy Norton to transform local grain from 'berries' to flour and then on to pasta.  The techniques can be used to produce a wide variety of pasta, with eggs or without, and just about any combination of grains.  We will have manual and electric grain mills and pasta rollers and cutters.  See More

And I got a lot of ideas from the drying session. I don't think everyone heard the comment about adding a bit of vinegar to hard water in a canning kettle to prevent white deposits on jars.

Thanks for organizing the food preservation workshop.

Thanks so much Nancy! I would love to receive grains, and it is totally fine if they are inactive (I'd also be happy to return some active grains once they get going). I haven't revived them before but I'm pretty familiar with Dom's site so I'm sure I can figure it out :-)
What is most convenient way for me to meet you? I work and live in downtown Ithaca but can also travel elsewhere. One idea -- from your comment it sounds like you might have a Meadowsweet milkshare pickup tomorrow? I do as well so I could go by whenever you plan to be there (or I imagine you could even leave them for me to pick up if you give me a sense of when you'll be there). Also -- I'd love to hear about piima milk!

Dear IthacaNancy,

Thanks for your welcome-I am trying to sign up for the workshop on food preservation in Varna on Friday evening April 12.I need to learn about it.I don't know how to can at all. I'm trying not to spread myself too thin this spring, it tends to land me in the hospital in the summer. It seemed as though I had to join to attend. Is this true?Sincerely, Helene

Thanks Nancy! I'm really excited about learning more and going to the April 12th workshop! And don't worry about names... I'm sure I'll be asking you many times, too! :)

Scything certainly is  good exercise, especially on a warm summer day.  You can also get into places that no tractor can reach.  Also, you have a LOT more control over the actual cutting.
