Homebrewing Workshop at Chris & Laura's House

April 27, 2013 from 1pm to 5pm
Homebrewing is rewarding and fun, but sometimes it can seem intimidating to get started! No need to fear; it's actually quite simple for the beginner and gets progressively more challenging as the brewer is ready to advance. We will demonstrate a full-grain mash, but we'll also discuss extract brewing and partial grain. We'll also discuss mead/wine making. We will have a special segment where the group can breakout into either a "beginner" or "experienced" session where they get customized…See More

Gail Blake replied to Katie Quinn-Jacobs's discussion Peas anyone? in the group Veggie Gardens
"I "usually" plant both peas and spinach the first week of April, except that every year that we have a warm spell in March (about a third of the time), I plant them both mid-March. That's what I did this year. Spinach is up about 3…"

Gail Blake replied to Erik W's discussion Wood Ashes in the Garden and/or Compost Pile in the group Veggie Gardens
"Hey Erik,   I just got my wood stove last year and had the same questions. Ashes are high in potassium, which plants need, but are harsh and in large doses may interrupt the life of your compost pile and your soil. After talking to several…"

Gail Blake replied to Krys Cail's discussion Grapes? in the group Fruits n' Nuts
"Hey Krys,   I just talked with Joe Ottati at Glendale Farms on Rt 414. He says his grapes are not ripe yet, that the rain has prevented them from ripening. I am guessing the other Seneca Lake growers would be in the same shape. He recommended…"

Gail Blake replied to Krys Cail's discussion Green shoots inside, SNOW outside in the group Veggie Gardens
"Have you ever started spinach inside for transplant in late March or whenever it gets dry enough? I am thinking to do this and wonder how well they transplant."

Gail Blake replied to Laura Woinoski's discussion Apple Storage Results in the group Cellaring
"I got two bushels of Keepsake apples from Black Diamond Farm (late October? early November) and stored them in their boxes inside plastic storage tubs in my basement, which stays about 53F in the winter. By early April, some of them were rotten and…"

Gail Blake replied to Katie Quinn-Jacobs's discussion Straw Potatoes in the group Veggie Gardens
"I tried this last year, not in rows but in round wire bins. I got very few potatoes and plants with very long stems. But I keep hearing about it, so it must be working for someone, right? Good luck and do report back!"

Gail Blake replied to crowjoy's discussion What did you plant today? in the group Veggie Gardens
"I have spinach, sugar pod peas, and chard planted outside and up, as well as some onions and kale that I overwintered. Cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, and some flowers are up in flats. I planted a PILE of spinach the first weekend of April,…"

Gail Blake replied to Alison F's discussion Where to get soil/ compost? in the group Veggie Gardens
"Fessenden Dairy in King Ferry makes really great compost. You can buy it in bags at Agway or buy it by the truckload at the farm. I have had bad luck with bulk compost from Agway. I got it from them two different years and both times it was…"

Livestock

Whether we're in it for the meat, milk, eggs or manure, livestock (as the word itself suggests) is a way not only to produce food, but also preserve it.

Gail Blake replied to Sharon Berger's discussion Carrots in the group Cellaring
"I store carrots in those green bags that are supposed to release the ethylene that promotes rot. I put the bags of carrots in a tupperware tote in my basement with the lid on loosely. I don't start it this time of year, though, I wait unitl…"

Anne Marie Whelan replied to Gail Blake's discussion Wanna trade? in the group Veggie Gardens
"I just saw this so it's probably too late for your pac choi, but I could bring you some kale on Monday if you're interested."

Wanna trade?

I have a wonderful bounty of pac choi, way more than my household can eat, and it is beginning to bolt. And this is only the first planting! Anyone care to have some pac choi in exchange for something that would be more immediately useful to us? That could be kale, chard, spinach, summer squash, broccoli, cherries, raspberries, or some other thing you have.

Gail Blake replied to Tracy Wells's discussion Elderflowers? in the group Wild Edibles
"Where did you get your elderberries? I planted some several years ago, but they didn't survive being near my black walnut trees. I would like to try again in a different spot."
