"Thanks for both your replies...  I had basically settled on trying an approach very similar to Gail's.  After a lot of goop goes into the compost pile, I add a thin layer of ashes and leaves.  We'll see how it goes!  "

"What I have done for years now, is save the ashes in a large can over winter and add it to the dormant early spring garden to mulch it in with the winter coop / barn cleanup. Tho I did learn that ashes wash down into the earth relatively fast and…"

"Hey Erik,   I just got my wood stove last year and had the same questions. Ashes are high in potassium, which plants need, but are harsh and in large doses may interrupt the life of your compost pile and your soil. After talking to several…"

Wood Ashes in the Garden and/or Compost Pile

This question is driving me crazy.  I've found all sorts of conflicting advice on the web, and I'd thought I'd ask you all about your opinions and experience... Can wood ashes be used to good benefit in your garden and/or compost pile?  If so, do you have any guidlines on how to use it, and how much to use, etc? Thanks in advance!See More

"Erik-- I'm also new to growing pear trees.  I don't use chemicals so am reconciled to taking a "watch and wait" approach.  However, I've recently tried making a garlic spray and selectively using it to protect…"

"I wouldnt worry too much about it yet. if the leaves start withering it might be signifigant, but all trees host a bit of fungus. And this would be the year for it, I am expecting problems with brown rot on my plums. I try to spray with wettable…"

"Yes.  You should be familiarizing yourself with the services of the local Cornell Cooperative Extension.  That way, when you have a suspected disease, you can arrange to bring a sample of the affected plant to their offices, and get an…"

Pear Tree Disease

I planted some pear trees a little over a year ago, and they seems to be doing well. One of the trees is an asian pear, and it has by far the most fruit on it.  (A bonus, since I wasn't expecting any fruit this year.)  However, I noticed on this plant there are some little brownish yellow spots on most of the leaves.  I looked it up and thought it might be the begginning of pear "rust" but I found some articles that made me think that didn't happen around here... Does anyone know what these…See More

"Brigid and I are doing pea and kidney beans - both bush varieties.  We are also trying edamame soy beans (also bush beans) for the first time.  Good luck on the black beans, Erik.  My guess is that they would be a bush bean, also."

"Maybe try sprouting a few and see how it goes?   Only trouble with not knowing the cultivar is you won't know if they need to climb or not. I guess if you plan for climbers and they don't, nothing lost. I'm trying a black bean…"

Black Beans

I want to try growing my own black beans.  Here's a dumb question...  Can I take the dried beans I've bought and plant them?  Or do I need to get special seeds? Otherwise do you treat them like peas?See More
