Adam C. Engst commented on Katie Quinn-Jacobs's event IthaCan Cider Pressing 2011
"Indeed - we had a good time too. We ended up mixing the apple and pear cider and freezing six 3/4-full jugs yesterday.   We're also trying to boil down a gallon of the pear cider into syrup. It's going a long time in the slow cooker.…"

Adam C. Engst commented on Katie Quinn-Jacobs's event IthaCan Cider Pressing 2011
"Thanks for doing this, Katie. I'm curious about your equipment, since when I've pressed cider with another friend, there was a lot of laborious cutting and grinding of the apples before pressing them (with a hand-cranked press), and it…"

IthaCan Cider Pressing 2011 at Kate's House

October 8, 2011 from 2pm to 5pm
We'll be pressing apples again this fall. BYOA (Bring Your Own Apples). If you have access to unsprayed/untreated apples bring 'em along. Last year we had a gorgeous fall morning and lots of apples and homemade treats as well. Spouse and kids welcome! In 2009, we averaged 2.5gal/bushel of apples. Be sure to bring cleaned containers with lids. We can have 10 members at this event. The cider will be unpasteurized, but you can pasteurize at home by heating to 165°-180°F. See attached…See More

"One possibility is lots of grass and weeds pulling food away from the tree. better not to fertilize too much, esp. for a young tree, and keep the grass/weeds down under the drip line, with mulch, or shudder, round up. the semi dwarf rootstocks need…"

Healthy apple trees that aren't bearing fruit

7-8 years ago we planted a number of apple trees - a Tompkins County King, a Johnagold, a Braeburn, and an Empire. And while the trees look gorgeous and have had to be pruned hard to keep them in even in the semi-dwarf category, they just don't seem to bear fruit (just a couple of apples a year). They're in an orchard with other trees that do fine, and we have two old apples not far away on the property that are loaded with apples every year, so I don't think it's a matter of bad soil or poor…See More

"We're great fans of what we consider "motivated" plants that come back every year, early and vigorously. We have:   Sorrel (French sorrel is best, garden sorrel a close second; very tart, lemony taste, and fabulous in…"
