I recently came into a small collection of Egyptian Onion starts.  These are so-called "walking onions" in that they produce scapes which will seed new onion plants.

I know very little about this variety of onion and though perhaps fellow Ithacanners might have some tips for me.  In particular, I'd like to know:

  1. What kind of soil they prefer?
  2. How much sun?
  3. How prolific are they?  Multiple scapes per plant?
  4. Are they harvested and processed like regular onions?
  5. What kind of success have you had?

I'd like to know the answers to these questions too! We already have "wild" onions and chives in our yard, seems like walking onions would be a good addition...
