I checked in on Seneca Lake this weekend about how the grapes were doing..... and the report was not so good. Apparently, the wet weather has been causing them to split quite a lot. I am planning to make juice, and may just head over there and pick Wednesday or so.... but, was thinking that maybe, if the grapes are bursting their skins from the wet weather, somebody would have more than they could use right away.
Anybody know of any freebie concords or other grapes?
I just talked with Joe Ottati at Glendale Farms on Rt 414. He says his grapes are not ripe yet, that the rain has prevented them from ripening. I am guessing the other Seneca Lake growers would be in the same shape. He recommended checking back late next week. I was hoping to make grape juice this weekend too. Ah well.
Thanks, Gail. Does Joe let you u-pick at his place? We picked from him decades ago, but had thought he just made it all into juice himself now...?
The place I have been talking with is across the road and down the hill quite a bit from Joe, and they may be on an earlier schedule due to being closer to the lake. If I pick some tomorrow, I will let you know how they are as far as sweet. Since we are planning to mix with apples, really sweet is not needed....
Still wanna find free ones!
