canning jars
I just missed last year's ordering for Canning jars. So I wanted to ask, when is the group order happening this year?

Yes! IthaCan will be hosting its Jar-a-thon in May. Last year we collectively purchased 96 cases of jars at a discount from Agway and will be doing the same again this year. FYI: Agway has generously donated jars for our Home Food Preserver's Workshop tomorrow night.

oh that's cool.
This year I'll probably be wanting to order half gallon jars if they're available as well. I mention it because it's not the typical size, but some of the agways do sell it. I refridgerator pickle in them. and am also using them to store the gluten free flours (mostly also in the fridge). now that my husband's mixing oatmeal in them as well - we're fighting over the jars. -

Several of us ordered cases of half gallons from the Jar-a-thon last year. I froze cider in mine. So, I'm sure we'll be able to do that again this year.

oh good. i know you're supposed to be able to freeze them, but i've been nervous about trying that with glass jars

The mason jars freeze well. You just have to leave room for expansion at the top...and be sure not to clunk your 20lb frozen turkey on one.

Is there anything we can/should do to thank Agway for the donation, besides buying more stuff there? Without that, I wouldn't have been going home with my lovely Kimchi.

I'm interested in participating in the the Jar-a-thon this May, I don't know how many jars I need or what size, but I have some goals for what I'd like to can this year, so maybe with a bit of advice I could add to the group order.

I'm definitely in for the jar-a-thon this year. Can never have too many 1/2 pint and pint jars.... they don't come back when you gift them! And, ojala, I hope there are tomatoes to can this year, half gallons would be perfect for that since I always end up using 2 quarts to make a meal.
May seems sooooo far away today. -
